Colorado Homes for Sale

It’s near the end of February. We’ve had beautiful weather in Denver over the last couple days. My family and I had a picnic outside at a local park. I walked the dog over there and my wife and girls road their bikes.

I lived in Orlando for 11 years so I’m used to nice weather this time of the year. One of my favorite things about Denver is that it does snow sometimes but it usually melts within a couple days because of the sun.

It was nice weather down here while parts of the mountains were getting a lot of snow. It amazes me that there can be such disparity within just a 100 miles.

It seems that the market for homes in the Denver area is still moving along at a good pace. Denver has been going through some difficult times over the last couple years with the Tech bust. There are a lot of new homes still going up.

Winter is still showing up here in Denver. In our part of town we got about eight inches of snow, but it already started melting. One of the nice things about Denver is that the snow doesn’t stick around for very long. Two years ago we were gone for the big snow storm that dumped three feet of snow. By the time we got home five days later, two feet of the snow had already melted.

Before the snow came we had crocus and daffodils popping up in our front yard. These flowers will be fine once the snow melts. It just goes to show you how fickle the weather can be at times, though it only lasts for a short period.

My brother-in-law is selling his house in Highland’s Ranch. They’ve really enjoyed the house but are moving up to Ft. Collins for work reasons. They wish they could just move the house up there with them.

Anyway, their neighbors have a two-story and have been looking for a ranch house like my brother-in-law has. They put an offer on the house with a contingency the neighbor sells his house. They both had Open Houses last Sunday.

There was a couple that came through to my brother-in-law who had several children. So my brother-in-law encouraged them about the neighborhood. The family went next door and ended putting down a contract on the house. So everyone’s happy.

We’ve been living in a three bedroom home in a neighborhood we like. We could fix up the basement and probably be very happy. But our neighborhood has some good mountain views.

There’s a house for sale a couple blocks away that has a nice view of the mountains and is on a greenbelt. It’s going for $60,000 more than our house is worth. But it also has a nice deck off the back. We haven’t been in the house, and we hear there is some heaving of the slab in the basement. How do we decide whether or not to buy a different house? Are the up sides greater than the downsides?

We might be able to fix the basement, and we might be able to fix up things in a manner we’d like elsewhere in the house. It might be worth the chance. We haven’t even visited the house yet. Right now it’s just a dream. We’ll see.

I was talking with a realtor in Telluride, Colorado recently and found out some interesting information about real estate properties there. There are plenty of lots, homes and condos for sale in the area, and it would be easy to buy or sell there because many of the residents there have their real estate licenses.

Of the 1,400 people who call Telluride, Colorado, home, almost 300 of them are licensed to sell. If your are trying to sell properties there, then you better be pretty good because that is quite a bit of competition. If you’re trying to sell your property there then you should go with someone who is experienced and knowledgeable about the make up of the area. It could be easy to get burned.

I’m sure some of the real estate professionals just do this type of work on the side and don’t know the in’s and out’s of the local market like more seasoned professionals would. This would be true of any real estate transaction, but mountain property can be even more tricky because of state and federal regulations, as well as the need to understand water rights.

Five years ago we experienced our first Halloween in Colorado after 11 years in Florida. It had snowed a couple days before so there was 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. We didn’t last too long and ended up back at my sister-in-laws house for hot soup and salad.

When we were in Orlando, we always had to plan the kids costumes in light of the heat. We didn’t want them getting to hot when running house to house. My youngest daughter was the Pillsbury Doughboy one year and the white make-up practically melted. She looked like the Doughboy on meth. We’ve already had a bit of snow this season but this Halloween should have decent weather.

Another sign we’re no longer in Florida happened yesterday. We had a pumpkin carving open house and the grandson of some friends lives about a half hour up the mountains in Evergreen. He said they can’t put their pumpkin out because of wildlife. A couple years ago they came outside one morning and an elk had eaten almost their whole jack o’lantern except for the candle.
